1 Float Warp
An extra warp woven into the surface of fabrics to keep the pile straight, as used in patent Axminster carpet fabrics. -
2 Float
There is also the float that is not required and which is a most objectionable fault in any cloth. It is often caused by careless weaving, although inferior yarn is very liable to produce this fault. End breakages, incorrect shedding, faulty action of the shedding mechanism, wrongly pegged dobby lags, wrongly cut jacquard cards, etc., are prolific causes of floats. ———————— Warp or weft threads which pass over the threads of the opposite series are said to be floated, and in twill, satin crepe and other weaves the length of the float is named in terms of the number of threads the floating thread passes over between two intersections. In very many cloths the sole means of figuring is the floating of the warp or weft according to a defined and prearranged plan. -
3 Float Mounting
A mill term used in weaving such cloths as vestings by means of jacquards and derived from the fact that the designs developed most frequently consist of angular figures produced by the face warp and weft floating at right angles to each other. -

5 Honeycomb Weave
This is a weave obtained by causing both warp ends and picks of weft to float in diamond shape to form ridges along the lines of the longest floats. A course of plain weave all round the floating warp and weft diamond shapes induces the formation of hollows. The weave is largely used in Bolton for quilts, toilet covers, etc. and in Heywood for towels. The Brighton and Grecian weaves are adaptations of the honeycomb principle. Honeycomb weaves may be arranged as in design W., where the weft diamond is larger than the warp diamond, or as in design E., where the weft diamond is the same size as the warp diamond -
6 Quilts, Toilet
QUILTS, TOILETA non-reversible fabric of the pique type in which a fine face cloth is woven by healds, and is figured by a tightly woven warp actuated by a jacquard. The usual arrangement is one binding warp to two face ends. The fabrics may be (1) " loose backs " in which the binding warp threads float on the back of the cloth when not forming figure; (2) half-fast; and (3) fast backs. In half-fast and fast backs the binding warp interweaves more or less firmly with an additional weft. In the better qualities, a third weft may be introduced as wadding. Toilets are usually woven grey and bleached in the piece. -

9 Biarritz Cloth
A reversible woollen cloth with a weft cord stripe and warp repp ground. The weave is a weft float over four warp ends, and each alternate stripe bound plain on the face, the other being bound on the back. -
10 Crimp Fabrics
The term includes such types as the "blister" and the "crepon." These fabrics are used for the making of dress goods, and can be produced in five different ways, namely: (a) by making suitable combinations of slack and tight weaves; (b) unequal warp tension in weaving, the crimp forming warp threads being allowed to weave very slack; (c) by combining two materials having a marked dissimilarity of shrinkage power during wet finishing, i.e., botany wool and mohair; (d) by modifying the weave structure in such a manner as to drop some picks from the main fabric and allow them to float on the back, the effectiveness of this method is enhanced by using a hard-twisted, single weft yarn to assist the contraction; (e) chemical means, such as is produced by printing the cloth in stripes with caustic soda of about 20 per cent strength, thickened with some substance such as starch. The cloth shrinks where printed and the unprinted parts in puckering gives the crimp effect. By dyeing the cloth two tones are obtained as a darker shade is shown where the caustic soda appears (see crepeing and crimps) -

15 Albert Diagonal
A heavy ribbed cotton cloth woven in a 6- or 7-shaft twill weave, as shown in the diagram, but also with a weft float of 3 threads. Usually 31-in 100 yards, 56 X 200, 16's / 28's. A strong level warp yarn and a good velvet weft is necessary. Woven on a velvet loom. A bold rib is produced -
16 Corkscrew Weave
A weave largely used by worsted manufacturers for coatings and trouserings. It is based on the sateen principle on 7, 9, or 11 shafts, and the length of float arranged as desired. Either warp or weft face can be made. Design 7 under Corkscrew Cloth shows a 7 end corkscrew weave. Design 9 shows a 9 end weft corkscrew weave. -
17 Felter
Badly-woven place caused usually by a broken warp thread or the entanglement of adjoining " ends " (see Float) -
18 Gentille
The French term for a mispick caused by the warp ends being wrongly raised on successive sheds thus forming a float over the surface. -
19 Lances
A general French term for fabrics in which certain of the weft threads only cross over selected warp threads and float over the rest. -
20 Sawdust Crepe
A variety of rayon fabric in which the crepe effect is obtained by the weave. The cloth has a harsher handle than a sand crepe. Both warp and weft yarns float over 4, 5 or 6 threads.
